An Uplift Success Story: Christianah Adejokun
These are the words that Christianah Adejokun pledged every day since the second grade. Christianah attended Uplift Summit Preparatory school in Arlington, Texas. Since her high school graduation in the Spring 2019, the words in this pledge have been brought to life in every chapter of Christianah’s journey.
Christianah graduated with honors from Texas Tech University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, having achieved the Dean’s List and President’s List for multiple semesters. She was awarded over six scholarships that covered her tuition and enabled her to graduate fully debt free.
She thanks Uplift’s counselors for their guidance in preparing her for college and appreciates her teachers who helped her develop the discipline to persist as she pursues a career in the medical field.
“Uplift gave me ample tools and resources to be able to succeed in life. Simple daily practices such as writing in our planner or saying the scholar pledge as a daily affirmation led to me carrying the same practices into college as well,” said Christianah. “I learned about the importance of applying for scholarships. I didn’t realize that so many students weren’t aware of those resources that allowed me to graduate debt free.”
Beyond the classroom, Christianah was an exceptional leader on campus. She served as President for the Black Student Association and the Black Caucus for two consecutive years. She represented her class as a part of the Student Government Association. She also competed and won the title of Miss West Texas USA 2023 and the title of USA National Miss Lubbock Teen.
However, Christianah is not done yet! She is studying for her master’s degree while working as a chemist in an analytical laboratory. This pathway is setting her up for continued success as she pursues medical school to achieve her dreams of graduating with a doctorate degree.
“A resource at Uplift that was extremely valuable to me was the Road to College and Career class that I took my senior year,” said Christianah. “It was not until I made it to college that I realized the in-depth, personalized guidance and counsel I received was not a universal experience of my peers.”
Christianah is excited to see that the next generation of scholars at Uplift have access to new programs that prepare them for careers in the medical field and ultimately economic freedom. She is the oldest of three girls and hopes her youngest sister, in the fourth grade, can take advantage of those programs.
“I was invited as an alumni speaker for the Baylor Scott & White and Uplift ‘It Starts With Me’ event. It was a full circle moment as someone who entered Uplift in the second grade and is now able to share my story on Uplift’s impact on my educational journey,” said Christianah. “My high school’s focus on economic freedom has always motivated me. I believed that I could achieve financial freedom through education…and I think it is truly amazing how Uplift is making an impact for thousands of students, including me.”
